Extended data

There are different opinions about the origin of the zodiac in China.

In the Tang Dynasty, Fayuan Zhu Lin claimed that the zodiac originated from the twelve animals of Buddhism. According to the records in the Buddhist "Dajijing" (translated into Chinese in April14), at the beginning of the world and the birth of mankind, Buddha and Bodhisattva became beasts, guarding the southeast, northwest and northwest respectively, protecting and educating all beings. The zodiac signs are consistent with those of China.
