Who is the red ingot for?
The custom of burning gold paper was popular as early as the Wei and Jin Dynasties in China. Gold paper, also known as Huang Biao, Wanguan and Long Seal, is generally printed with Taoist scriptures, letters patent and some spells, and is a gift for offering sacrifices to gods, ancestors, ghosts or returning to Lu. Taoism helps all beings in the underworld by burning golden paper, which fully embodies the Taoist thought of kindness and care.
The Origin and Function of Paper Ingots
Gold ingots are made of precious gold or silver. Generally speaking, there is much silver, but little gold. In the currency history of China, gold and silver were officially called "gold ingots", which began in the Yuan Dynasty. However, as early as the early Tang Dynasty, when Kaiyuan Bao Tong existed in the world, people thought it was huge and precious, and called it "Kaiyuan Bao Tong". In the Yuan Dynasty, calling gold and silver money "gold ingot" meant the treasure of the Yuan Dynasty. Gold is called gold ingot and silver ingot is called silver ingot, which has both political meaning and common name of gold and silver currency.
Later, every year in Tomb-Sweeping Day, Double Eleven or the anniversary of the deceased, many villagers would burn paper ingots to pay homage to their deceased relatives, while the custom in some areas was to burn paper money. Most of these paper ingots are made of gold paper foil, which represents family members' memories of their loved ones and their wishes for a better life in heaven.
