What is the symbolic significance of the American flag?
The pattern of the American flag symbolizes the division of administrative districts. Each star represents a state. The United States has 50 states and one directly affiliated district (the District of Columbia, where the capital is located). There are more and more white stars on the American flag. For example, Alaska, the forty-ninth state, was purchased from Russia in 1867, and Hawaii, the fiftieth state, was annexed in 1898. It was not until 1959 that these two States became two white stars engraved on the American flag. The red and white stripes of 13 on the American flag symbolize the 13 colonies that fought for independence from Britain, that is, the 13 states in the eastern United States.
