In the 24th year of Jian 'an (2 19), Liu Bei captured Hanzhong and became the king of Hanzhong, conferring Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong as "Five Tiger Generals".

The Army of Five Tiger Generals, also known as the Army of Five Tiger Generals and General of Five Tiger Generals, refers to the five valiant soldiers under Liu Bei, Emperor Zhaolie of Shu Han in Luo Guanzhong's novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. According to the description in Romance, in the twenty-fourth year of Jian 'an (2 19), Liu Bei captured Hanzhong and became the king of Hanzhong, conferring Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Ma Chao and Huang Zhong as "five tigers generals", which later generations used to call "five tigers generals".
