Introduction:
A contemporary filmmaker suddenly found himself in an ancient palace in St. Petersburg 1700 years ago, and no one around him could see him. He had the same experience as a French diplomat in the19th century. This adventure allowed them to start a historical roaming and witnessed the changes of Russia for thousands of years.
He strolled in the magnificent palace, witnessed the personal life of Peter the Great who lashed his general wildly with a whip, witnessed Queen Catherine, witnessed the last dinner of the last czar family on the eve of the revolution, and witnessed the last magnificent royal ball in 19 13.
With the development of time travel, the two men kept arguing about the history and culture of Russia: Marquez insisted on the traditional western feelings of love and hate for Russia, while modern filmmakers reflected and questioned his country's past and present.
About the director:
Alexander sokurov is the most important director in the contemporary Russian film industry, and is regarded as the spiritual heir of tarkovsky. Although this comparison somewhat obliterates sokolov's personality, there are many similarities between them: preference for long shots, natural performances by actors, and equal attention to the essence of human existence and spiritual field.
Sokolov 195 1 was born in rural Siberia and graduated from the History Department of Gorky University. 19 years old began to work as a TV director assistant. Until 1975, he directed TV programs for Gorky TV. Later, he went to Moscow State Film Academy to study. During this period, he made his debut and attracted the attention of Tarkovsky. On the recommendation of the master, he entered the Leningrad film studio to work. However, most of his early works received negative comments in the studio. Before the reform, almost every film was banned, which made him turn to documentary creation. It was not until the late 1980s that he entered the international audience. First, his 1978 feature film debut "The Voice of the Lonely Man" won an award at the Lucano Film Festival. Since then, his works have received continuous attention.
Sokolov's films caused extreme opposition in the former Soviet Union. Some people think that his new film language is another peak of modern writers' films, while others accuse him of stiffly repeating the western avant-garde film road. But he is the darling of European and American critics. He has been very active since the film production environment was relatively relaxed in the late 1980s.
From 65438 to 0989, he creatively adapted Madame Bovary into Salvation and Protection. The typical themes and characteristics of his works appear in this film: religious thoughts, fierce struggle between soul and body, infatuation with death and meticulous psychophysics. The Day of the Eclipse, released in the same year, is frightening because of its sharp and bleak description of human suffering. Both films have poetic images and persistent exploration of the suffering side of human beings.
Mental depression and depression are more obvious in his next trilogy, Second Samsara, Stone and Silent Years. And Mother and Son (1996) has also become his most acclaimed film so far. Through the use of filters and wide-angle lenses, sokolov has brought his aesthetic pursuit in images to the extreme. This film, which has almost no plot, depicts the life of a dying mother and her son on the deathbed, and becomes the director's symbolic meditation on life and death and mental problems. Three years later, sokolov continued his state before the end of the National People's Congress. This is his "trilogy of death", all featuring a famous political figure. The protagonist of Vulcan is Hitler, who has shaped it into a "Shakespeare-style modern historical figure" with his own personalized concept, and his vision goes straight to the depths of human nature opposite to the regime machine. This film won the Best Screenplay Award at Cannes Film Festival. Last year, I participated in Taurus in Cannes, with Lenin as the protagonist, and shifted the focus from the political and historical background to the empty black hole in the inner world of the characters.
Death is sokolov's most interesting subject. He is obsessed with describing the dying state and death ceremony of human beings. Through the delicate expression of his body, he showed the mental or moral pain related to death, and embodied the loneliness, fate and pain of human beings in the body without life. Words are superfluous in front of him. The tortured body is the carrier of truth and meaning in his eyes. With death as the background, sokolov's exploration begins with the body and ends with the spirit.
Sokolov often presents images by physical means, and a small scene can be infinitely enlarged, elongated and detailed. Typical sokolov-style visual magic is a poetic dreamlike atmosphere condensed by extremely long shots that are still or moving very slowly, and fine light and shadow design.
About film production:
This film is an ambitious experiment. The film was shot continuously in a famous palace in St. Petersburg for 90 minutes each time, so that the shooting time completely coincided with the film time. The whole movie is finished in one shot, and sokolov has repeatedly stressed that there will be no switching in his works, that is, he will give full play to his favorite long-shot aesthetics. In addition, this is the first feature film shot directly on the hard disk, and a high-definition digital camera is used. This is a huge and complicated project. The shooting site includes 35 palaces, and more than 850 actors participated in the performance. The film spans four centuries and scans the turbulent situation in Russian history. For the director, it is undoubtedly a great challenge, even an adventure. The film is not recorded synchronously, and every scene detail has to be accurately calculated and arranged. Post-production will adjust the picture effects such as color and light without editing. Sokolov and his film crew began to prepare in April, and filmed on February 23rd, 65438.
The film will reproduce the historical events in this palace as accurately as possible, especially through modern advanced media technology. The audience will follow the camera into the ancient palace, meet Peter the Great, and revel in the joyful dance. Will attend the reception of Nicholas I to welcome foreign envoys; Chatting with famous artists in front of his works. History, politics, visual arts, music and dance will all be perfectly integrated into the film. Sokolov called the film a mixture of various art forms: drama, documentary and musical. Palace is a witness of history and a symbol of national culture.
