It is an ideal survival and breeding area for South China tigers, and it is one of the main distribution areas of South China tigers in our province in history.
According to county records, tigers and leopards often appeared in Yihuang County before liberation. In 1950s and 1960s, due to people's misunderstanding, they were killed as pests. According to the statistics of the number of tiger skins purchased by local products, foreign trade and supply and marketing departments in the county, Yihuang County hunted 55 South China tigers in 1950s, 25 South China tigers in 1960s and 0/0 South China tigers/kloc-0 in 1970s, accounting for 34% of 264 South China tigers hunted in Jiangxi Province in the same period.
After 1980s, with the development of social economy, the habitat of South China tiger in and out of the province has been deteriorating, and the population of South China tiger has decreased sharply. However, in Yihuang County, where the South China Tiger Reserve has been built, people keep seeing the South China Tiger in Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Xinfeng, Northeast China and Baizhu.
1990 1 1 February, sent by the world wide fund for nature, Dr. Gary Kohler, an American cat expert, and his wife, Ms. Mono, made a special trip to Yuya, Yihuang, and found that there were still South China tigers in our county.
Through tiger trails, interviews and habitat surveys, experts from the Ministry and the province not only confirmed that there are South China tigers in Yihuang County, but also the breeding population of South China tigers.
