How did the pigment come from?
Pigments are generally minerals, and dyes are generally from plants, but most of the dyes are synthetic now. Different compounds absorb and reflect light of various wavelengths in different proportions, thus producing different colors.
Pigment is a substance that can color objects. Pigments are soluble and insoluble, inorganic and organic. Inorganic pigments are generally minerals. People have long known to use inorganic pigments to paint on rock walls and paint their bodies by using colored soil and minerals. Organic pigments are generally taken from plants and marine animals, such as indigo, gamboge and purple extracted from shellfish in ancient Rome.
