Origin of idioms

Sima Qian's Historical Records of Confucius' Family in the Western Han Dynasty: "After living in Yue Wei, Gong Ling and his wife rode in the same car, and hundreds of officials rode out of the Yong Canal, so that Confucius rode twice and swam across the city." Later generations derived the idiom "swaggering through the city" from this allusion.

During the Spring and Autumn Period, Confucius, who preached Confucianism and etiquette with his disciples, traveled around the world and went to defend the country one year. Wei Linggong asked Confucius, "What was your salary when you were in Lu?" Confucius truthfully replied: "The official salary is 60,000 barrels." He also gave Su 60,000 buckets, but he was cold to Confucius.

It wasn't long before a good man spoke ill of Confucius to Wei Linggong, and Wei Linggong listened. So he sent people to deliberately take soldiers in and out of Confucius. Confucius was worried that he would get into trouble, so he only stayed for ten months and finally left Weiguo.

After leaving Weiguo, Confucius and his disciples ran into a wall everywhere. After more than a month, they returned to Weiguo and lived in other people's homes. Wei Linggong's wife, Nanzi, sent someone to say to Confucius: "Gentlemen from all countries who are interested in climbing friendship with our monarch will definitely come to see our wife, and our wife is willing to see you."

Confucius asked for forgiveness and pleaded guilty, but in the end he had to see Mrs. Gong Ling. About Wei Linggong listened to his wife's good words. A month later, Wei Linggong and his wife sat in the same car, asked eunuchs to accompany them around, and then went out of the palace gate. He let Confucius sit in the second car, followed the bus and swaggered through the market, deliberately showing off his style in front of everyone.

Confucius said with emotion, "I have never met anyone who loves beauty as much." He was disappointed in Wei Linggong, so he left Weiguo and went to other countries.
