The ancient custom of Qixi

In ancient times, the wind of drying books and clothes on Tanabata has been popular for a long time. Tanabata drying books and clothes became popular as early as the Han Dynasty. In the Jin Dynasty, the story of Sima Yi pretending to be crazy and avoiding disaster was widely circulated. Coupled with the flashy style at that time, drying books and clothes on Qixi gradually evolved from insect prevention and corrosion prevention to a means for literati and bureaucrats to show their education level and wealth.

In the Song Dynasty, the Qixi Book Seal was officially certified. During the Southern Song Dynasty, due to the high humidity in the south, Song Gaozong, Song Xiaozong and Song Ningzong held a "book-drying meeting" on Tanabata every year to advocate the protection of various books and historical materials. Official book-drying has gradually become a daily activity, and folk book-drying activities have also been further developed. The custom of drying books on Qixi continued until the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
