What does Huang Wu in the Yellow Calendar mean?
China Jiangnan folk Dragon Boat Festival has the custom of eating "Huang Wu". "Huang Wu" refers to Monopterus albus, yellow croaker, cucumber, salted duck eggs and realgar wine. There are other sayings that salted duck eggs can be replaced by soybeans.
In the legend "The Legend of the White Snake", the White Snake drank realgar wine, revealing the original shape of the snake. Therefore, people think that realgar wine can crack snakes, scorpions, centipedes and other poisonous insects, and drinking realgar wine on Dragon Boat Festival can drive away evil spirits and detoxify, which is beneficial to health (modern science proves that drinking realgar wine is easy to be poisoned).
According to folklore, eating Huang Wu at noon can better ward off evil spirits.
