Extended data:
Heavenly stems and earthly branches Chronology began in the early Eastern Han Dynasty, and people used Ganzhi Chronology in the period of Emperor Guangwu Liu Xiu. It was extended to the Ganzhi calendar year in the second year of Emperor Han and Yuan (AD 85), and was promulgated in the form of a government order throughout the country. Later, all dynasties and generations adopted the year number and the dry branch method as the year, but it was not abolished along the line.
For thousands of years, China's traditional calendar, the Han calendar (Lunar Calendar), has adopted the method of counting the years from the first month of the new year (New Year's Day), just like the year of the emperor.
