According to legend, Yi was abandoned in the mountains by his parents when he was only five years old, so he grew up in the mountains and learned a skill, and he was best at archery. Later, he became an archer and was sealed by Emperor Yao in Shangqiu, Henan.

In the era when Yao proclaimed himself emperor, ten suns appeared in the sky at the same time. The appearance of these ten suns dried up rivers, withered crops, and people were so hot that they fell unconscious on the ground. Moreover, because it was too hot, all the wild animals in the forbidden area ran out, and they also ran out from the dry rivers and lakes and burning forests, killing people everywhere. Before quelling this disaster, Yao Ming had to invite Otsuka to use his marksman ability to shoot down nine suns in the sky, and the story of Otsuka shooting at the sun was also praised by later generations.

However, in the process of later generations praising the story of shooting at the sun with great righteousness, people gradually confused the name of Hou Yi, the monarch of Xia Dynasty, with great righteousness.
