Without Japanese bibliography, there would be no such words as "science, progress and society".
How to translate science into "science"? Professor Wu said in the program that Kang Youwei introduced the word science from Japan to China in 1895. According to the records in the Chronicle of Kang Nanhai, Kang Youwei wrote the Chronicle of Japanese Bibliography in the 22nd year of Guangxu (1896), and it was written by the newly established Shanghai Datong Translation Company in the 24th year of Guangxu (1897) before June of the 23rd year of Guangxu. That is, from then on, China people first knew this word. It is worth mentioning that Kang Youwei has never been to Japan before. He obtained new books or related materials through some relatives and friends of Japanese who went to Japan for business or lived in China. Kang himself doesn't know Japanese. With the help of his daughter Kang Tongwei, he learned the main contents of this book and compiled this catalogue.
The Japanese Bibliography contains 7,725 Japanese books, which are divided into physiology, science, religion, history, politics, law, agriculture, industry, business, education, literature, language, art, novels, military books and so on. Each door is divided into several subclasses. It is also in this book that Kang Youwei introduced many Japanese words, such as science, progress, society, cadres and so on.
The word "science" was translated into Japanese by Japanese educator Fukuzawa Yukichi, that is, Lord Fukuzawa, who owns the largest face value of Japanese paper money 10000 yen. It is said that new banknotes will be replaced in Shibusawa Eiichi in 2024, and many Japanese people are still not satisfied.
Later, after more than ten years of development, Chinese academic circles finally chose the word "science" as our definition. However, if we look at the word "science", it is easy to associate it with the study of disciplines. However, too much emphasis on the division of disciplines leads to more and more detailed division of disciplines. Since high school, I have been divided into liberal arts and science. After studying liberal arts, I will not study science. It has caused the incompleteness of the knowledge system and artificially separated the connection between science and humanities. To some extent, we haven't been able to cultivate people who are proficient in China and the West for many years.
Fortunately, in recent years, academic circles have discovered this problem, and universities have set up general education courses. Only by systematically studying and understanding the human knowledge system can we achieve fruitful results.
