The function of top beam couplets is Naji.

In the whole process of building a house, "upper beam" is the most important and exquisite. When the house is about to be built, before the main girder is erected, we should choose an auspicious day and a sunny day to "beam". On this day, Shangliang will sacrifice to God, set off firecrackers and put couplets on the top beam. Its main function is Naji.

The offerings were selected from the housewife's family. As the saying goes, picking "five animals" means pigs, sheep, geese, chickens and ducks, plus all kinds of fruits. If the conditions at home are good, there are also desks and chairs. On the way to pick them up, family members should line up, with the older ones in front and the younger ones behind. Finally, they usually choose a big bamboo broom, which means sweeping wealth into the new house.

Allusions of Shangliang couplets

Speaking of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties, one day, Jiang Taigong visited four towns and arrived at a village in the evening. He saw a family building a house, and it was almost tomorrow. However, Jiang Taigong's fingers count, tomorrow will be a bad day. If the beam is light, the wall will fall, and if the beam is heavy, people will die or be injured. Jiang Taigong couldn't bear to make this family suffer misfortune, but he couldn't discover the mystery, so he wanted to stay here for one night, and the next day, when he was in this family, he would solve the disaster.

So he asked the family to stay for the night. The master is a kind and simple old farmer. Although there was no room for building a house, seeing that Jiang Taigong was an old man with white hair and beard, he agreed, and arranged for Jiang Taigong to live in a makeshift hut, while he spent the night under the locust tree in front of the house.

The next day, when he was on the beam, Jiang Taigong said to the old farmer, "It's best to write a sign on the beam so that everything will be smooth." The old farmer said, "No one in the village can write." Jiang Taigong said, "I can write. You go and prepare a bunch of hemp so that I can use it as a pen, and then ash the bottom of the pot with water so that I can use it as ink. " The old farmer did as Jiang Taigong said.

In a short time, Fu Zi wrote it. That's a couplet. The first part is "the beam is in the ecliptic", and the second part is "the column happens to meet the purple emblem star". Jiang Taigong read the couplet, and everyone said it was well written.

At this time, Jiang Taigong was advised to go, saying that he was old and inflexible, and he was about to get into the beam, so don't knock against him here. Jiang Taigong said, "I am too old to help others, so let me stand aside and shout' OK' when I get on the beam." When they saw that he was sincere, they said nothing.

Liang Liang and Jiang Taigong shouted "Yes" several times. Sure enough, the beams and columns were erected smoothly without any accident. At that moment, Jiang Taigong drifted away. At noon, masons are eating in the new house that has just been put on the beam. A foreign gentleman passed by. He saw that the couplets on the beam were not written by idle people, but by Jiang Taigong, and told them. They didn't notice that the old man with white hair and beard had left.

It is said that from then on, whenever someone built a house and put it on the beam, they would always write a pair of couplets to pray for good luck, some wrote the one left by Jiang Taigong, and some simply wrote "Here comes the squire" and so on. In addition, please ask some onlookers to shout "OK! Good "! This custom has been passed down to this day.
