Japanese traditional festival-Hakata Dongda Festival with a long history?

Hakata is the administrative district of Fukuoka, the largest city in Kyushu, Japan. It is also the seat of Fukuoka Prefecture Hall and an important transportation hub in Fukuoka City and even Kyushu. The word "Dongtaku" in Bodo Dongtaku Festival comes from the Dutch word "Zondag", which means "Sunday" and "rest day". It is said that this festival first started with the New Year performance in 1 179, and was called "Songpai" at that time.

During the Edo period, if you want to visit the Lord of Fukuoka, you should form a parade headed by people dressed as auspicious gods (called "birds and beasts" in Japanese), which gradually became a local tradition. During the Meiji government, the authorities banned this traditional activity on the grounds of luxury, and later the citizens renamed it "DONTAKU" and preserved it. This is the Bodo East Tower Festival that people see today.

During World War II, the Hakata East Festival was closed again. After the war, in order to inject vitality into the city as soon as possible, the festival was resumed locally. This shows that the Hakata East Festival is really a celebration of the citizens. Now, it has been renamed "Hakata Dongtaku Port Festival", and some live activities will be held in Hakata Port during the festival.
