Cultural characteristics of Miao nationality

1. Miao language belongs to the Miao branch of Miao Yao language family of Sino-Tibetan language family. In the early 1950s, the second research group of minority languages survey of China Academy of Sciences, through on-the-spot investigation, scientifically studied the word formation of Miao languages in various places, but with different phonetic features, divided Miao languages into three dialects, namely Xiangxi dialect, Guizhou Oriental dialect, Sichuan-Guizhou-Yunnan dialect, seven sub-dialects and eighteen dialects.

2. At the beginning of the 20th century, some Miao intellectuals created some square characters for the development of Miao culture and education, such as Fang Miaowen created by Shibantang in western Hunan, shorthand Miao Wen created by Shi Qigui, and Miao Wen textbook compiled by Songtao Long Shaohua in Guizhou. Some foreign missionaries also created some Miao Wen for missionary purposes.

3. The main natural worship objects of Miao nationality are the sky, the earth, the sun, the moon, boulders, trees, bamboos, rocks and bridges. In Malipo, Jinping, Yunnan, whenever crops are heading, some Miao people sacrifice to "Heaven and Earth" to pray for a bumper harvest, which is the relic of Miao people's worship of Heaven and Earth.

4. There are more than 100 styles of Miao women's wear, and there are dozens of headdresses inserted in the bun alone, which is a typical traditional "dressing up". Miao women generally wear narrow sleeves, big collars, double-breasted tops and pleated skirts. The dress is either long to the feet, elegant and colorful, or short to the knees and graceful. Miao men's clothing is relatively simple, and their tops are mostly double-breasted shorts or right-handed robes.

Miao nationality has two surnames, one is Miao nationality and the other is Han nationality. Miao surname is inherent; China's surname was entered later. Because in the past, Miao people didn't write their own Miao surnames in words, but only wrote Han surnames in Chinese characters, which led people to think that there were only Han surnames, but they didn't know there were Miao surnames. Before the use of "Han surname", Miao people had their own "Miao surname" to distinguish blood clan from clan.

National culture is the soul of national tourism destination and the core element of tourism attraction. The most obvious and attractive core resources for the development of tourism in Xijiang Miao Village are the village landscape composed of thousands of wooden diaojiao buildings and the excellent traditional culture of Miao nationality contained in the village.

Xijiang Miao Village has always made rice cultivation as its main livelihood. The villagers mainly grow rice for a living, followed by burning millet, and hunting in the mountains during the slack season to make up for the lack of meat. Before the reform and opening up, agriculture was dominant in Miao village of Xijiang River. After the reform and opening up, all kinds of businessmen began to appear sporadically in Xijiang Miao village.

By 1995, only 10 households in the village were engaged in commercial operation and 20 households were engaged in embroidery processing. Like many minority villages in China, their livelihood is single, their economy is weak, and there is no modern industry as the basis for development. Since the development of tourism in 2008, Miao culture has been paid close attention to in the creation of scenic spots, the supply of tourism cultural products and marketing strategies.
