Extended data:
In the Song Dynasty, Hainan was a semi-open wild land as a whole. The local people are very superstitious. They didn't have a doctor when they were sick, so they relied on magicians to see a doctor. The only way to cure the disease is to kill cattle and sacrifice them to the gods. Every year, the cows brought in from the mainland are used to worship the gods, and many rich people have to kill dozens of cows.
Su Dongpo is a devout Buddhist, trying to change this bad habit. He personally went to the countryside to collect medicines, studied the types of medicines, wrote medical books, and explored medicines for local people, such as nettles and xanthium sibiricum.
When Su Dongpo arrived in Hainan, he found that the local people did not attach importance to agricultural production, and they all made a living by trading incense, wasteland and hunting. Li Jingxin said that at that time, the locals also dipped the immature mice in sugar and ate them raw.
To this end, Su Dongpo gave them publicity and education on "persuading farmers", saying that only by paying attention to planting wheat and millet can they meet the needs of life; Actively developing agricultural production will bring long-term welfare. He also enthusiastically wrote "Poetry of Encouraging Agriculture".
Su Dongpo had a great influence on Hainan's culture and initiated Hainan's cultural education. Before Su Dongpo came to Hainan, there were no real scholars in Hainan. After he came to Hainan, he trained Jiang Tangzuo, the first person in Hainan, and Fu Que, the first scholar.
Since then, Hainan people have gained a lot in the imperial examinations. According to statistics, in the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties, Hainan produced 767 juren and 97 Jinshi. This cannot but be attributed to Su Dongpo's great contribution to Hainan education.
