Find out the story of Tasmania.

On August 1642, the expedition led by Tasman set out again. The purpose of their trip is to open up a new air route to Tawiah, and the second is to find the southern continent, and if possible, find out the boundary of this magical continent and bypass it from the south.

Although Australia has been discovered by the Dutch, its scope, nature and inhabitants remain a mystery. An important task of Tasman's expedition is to determine its boundaries and investigate its wealth.

The expedition consists of Zehan and the flagship Kames. "Kames Ge" is an old warship with a displacement of 60 tons, and its deck has rotted by half. Its captain is DeJackson harriman. Zehan is a three-masted transport ship with a displacement of100t, and its captain is Gretel Jansson. The chief navigator of the fleet is Francis Jacobs Veske, who is experienced and an outstanding astronomer.

On September 5th, Tasman expedition arrived in mauritius island. They stayed here for more than two months, repairing ships and rigging. Tasman, on the other hand, used this time to find that the longitude of mauritius island was 3 27' east than that marked on the map at that time.

On October 8th, 65438/KLOC-0, Tasman's fleet set sail and sailed south along the northwest wind. 10 year1On October 22nd, Tasman turned to the southeast again and reached near 49 south latitude. The fleet struggled in the fog, and in the fierce storm mixed with hail and snowflakes, the endless cold current tortured the crew. The huge waves blowing from the southwest and south made Tasman understand that there could be no land there, so he accepted the advice of the navigator Veske and turned to the northeast and sailed to the low latitude waters. Of course, Tasman recorded the voyage diary in detail, including the results of astronomical observation, the deviation of compass and the observation of the sky and ocean. It's all written in the diary. 165438+1October 22nd, he wrote: "The needle of the compass keeps swinging and will not stop at any point in eight directions, which leads me to conclude that there is magnetite here."

1642165438+1On the afternoon of October 24th, the blue sky was bright and the sun was shining, and the fleet was moving eastward in the breeze. The crew were sitting or lying on the deck, laughing all over the sky. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, at 42 degrees south latitude, they found unknown land. As the ship approached, Tasman saw the mountainous coast and deep bay. He named the two highest peaks "Kames Gai Ke" and "Zehan" after the expedition ship, and named this land "Wangji Cotton Land". This place name has been used for 200 years. It was not until the 250th anniversary of Tasman's birth in 1852 that it was just and reasonably changed to Tasmania today.

The next morning, they continued to sail south along the coast, looking for a bay suitable for berthing. On the forest-covered coast, there are always steep cliffs that are impassable, and the westerly waves make it impossible for the ship to anchor. Eight days later, they found a spacious place convenient for parking. During these eight days, many straits, bays and coastal islands were added to their charts.

After the expedition went ashore, a wooden pillar was set up on the shore, and then everyone signed or inscribed it. They saw that from the hilly coast to the highest peak, there were tall and rare trees, and there were almost no bushes. They also saw the footprints of animals with claws as big as tigers.

However, they didn't see anyone, only heard people shouting and shouting. Smoke rises over the woodland, indicating that there are people living there. The sailors saw a cut in the trunk, and it was obvious that someone had climbed the big tree to dig the eggs. The distance between the ridges is 1.5 long, which makes the sailors guess that the residents here must be giants, so they resolutely refuse to enter the depths of this place. In fact, Tasmanians are kind and amiable. They live a primitive hunting life, hunting kangaroos and seals, and sometimes whales stranded on the beach. Their hunting tools are spears, swords and sharp gravel. They have been able to drill wood for fire and barbecue food on the fire. Their houses are generally conical huts made of tree poles, covered with bark and branches, which are simple and windproof. Their clothes are made of kangaroo skin, and even in cold seasons, they often walk naked.

On February 3, 65438, Tasman decided to land in person and raise the Dutch flag. However, the rough waves prevented the ship from landing. Peter Jacobs, a carpenter on board, swam ashore with a flag, raised the flag and declared that the land belonged to the Dutch.

Subsequently, the expedition continued to sail north along the east coast of Wang Jimian's land, and successively discovered Burnix Bay and Tasman Peninsula. When the fleet arrived at the entrance of bass strait, the fierce headwind forced them not to sail north. By this time, the Tasman fleet had sailed across the entire east coast of the island.
