The meaning of the word Geng

The word Geng means: the seventh or seventh age of heavenly stems.

Geng, pinyin gēng, the word first appeared in the bronze inscriptions of Shang Dynasty. The original meaning of "Geng" is not seen in the literature, which is quite controversial. As early as in Oracle Bone Inscriptions, Geng was called the seventh day of work. The ancients matched the dry branches with the five elements, five prescriptions, five flavors and five permanents, so Geng was given the meaning of gold and righteousness. The summer solstice of the lunar calendar is three nights and three volts, so three volts has become another name for "Geng".

In Shuowen, Xiao Zhuan split the middle part into the shape of left and right hands, while Qin Li changed the left and right parts to asymmetry, with the right side flattened and the left side unchanged. When it developed to the Eastern Han Dynasty, the two oblique pens in the upper part became horizontal pens, adding a little more. Finally, regular script integrates the top and left lines of the dry shape into a wide prefix, and the vertical pen in the middle is split into human characters, which is the current Geng character.
