Off-year, it is a day when people sacrifice stoves to sweep the dust. It is called house cleaning in the north and dust removal in the south. Ordinary people clean the dust and clean the house. We Buddhists should sweep away the invisible "dust"-troubles and make our hearts clean.

"Dust" also means do as the Romans do. It is the homonym of "Chen", which refers to all the unlucky things in the past.

"Sacrificing a stove to sweep the dust" means sweeping away all the dust at home before the first month of the lunar calendar, which means getting rid of all the bad things in the past and welcoming a beautiful New Year.

Therefore, on the off-year day, people will clean houses, prepare sacrifices and worship the kitchen god. It is said that the Kitchen God will go to heaven on this day and report all kinds of good and evil to the Jade Emperor. According to the report of Kitchen God, the Jade Emperor rewards good and punishes evil.

It is the custom in some places that there must be honey, sugar cakes and the like in the sacrifice. It is said that the Kitchen God can speak sweet words, but he can only say good things in front of the Jade Emperor. As the saying goes, "Heaven speaks well, and descent is auspicious."

Of course, this is just people's beautiful yearning. God is upright and observant. Kitchen God can't lie, and Jade Emperor can't be ignorant. Although they have the power to reward good and punish evil, they have no ability to change the cause and effect of good and evil.

Good and evil, good and evil are all caused by people's own thoughts, words and deeds. As long as you follow the teachings of the Buddha and stop doing evil and good, you will be blessed from afar and you will get happiness from suffering. This is a natural law, and the Jade Emperor Kitchen God is no exception.

A layman can respect God, ancestors, pagans, etc. But he should know that respect is different from conversion, respect is politeness, and conversion is the whole-hearted belief, trust, dependence and investment in the three treasures.

Shun Zheng Lun said: "Immortals dare not ask for the five commandments, nor dare they ask for the monks' gifts, for fear of damaging their merits and longevity. The gods dare not be worshipped by the Five Commandments, for fear of damaging their merits and longevity. )

Third, the significance of temples supporting bodhisattvas.

Every day, the temple provides a bodhisattva who guards the monks to eat, but during the off-year period, the offerings are more abundant and there are grand ceremonies.

There is a proverb in the temple: "If you don't taste three iron bars first, you can make nine bronze hammers privately for eating and drinking. It means that if you steal food that is not offered to a Buddhist monk once, you will be punished by three iron bars; If you cook food privately once, you will be punished with nine bronze hammers. The Bodhisattva who is in charge of fasting is recorded in the book and punished according to the crime when karma comes.

In the early years, the temple offered sacrifices to the Bodhisattva, one in memory of the Bodhisattva becoming a monk and the other in order to learn from Gude, be an ascetic cook and serve the public.

The best place to exercise in the temple is the kitchen. Ci Shou, a Zen master in the Tang Dynasty, said in "Children's Songs": "The incense is accumulated in the kitchen with good intentions, and the dragons in the five lakes are sung in the jungle. Although it is hard to look at the stars and the moon, we must believe that the deep fruit is also deep. 」

Cooking in the jungle is hard, but it is the most rewarding and rewarding. In the history of Buddhism in China, many eminent monks realized Taoism in their daily work, such as sweeping the floor, chopping wood, boiling water, cooking and so on. Therefore, there is a saying in Buddhism: "Since ancient times, Daliao has been the founder. 」

Finally, the new year is coming, and monks, laymen and people all over the world should sum up and correct their shortcomings in the past year. In the new year, they should be more diligent in keeping precepts, doing good deeds and repairing blessings, chanting holy names, chanting spells and cultivating wisdom, in order to feel the protection of the three treasures, achieve their wishes and be responsive!
