Miyoshi Umeki (1May 8, 929-August 28, 2007), formerly known as Mamu Zhi Dai, was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan, a jazz, traditional pop singer and actor. Later, he joined the United States and was regarded as the first generation of Japanese overseas Chinese. Miyoshi Umeki won the 1957 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Love with Marlon Brando. Miyoshi Umeki also appeared in the movie "Flower Drum Lantern", Broadway musical and TV series "Daddy's Court". She was nominated for Tony Award and Golden Globe Award, and was the first and only East Asian actress to win an Oscar.

Meimei Zhi Dai was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan on 1929. She is also the ninth (and youngest) child of her parents. Mei Mei Zhi Dai's father owns an iron works. After World War II, Miyoshi Umeki began to sing in nightclubs under the pseudonym Nancy Mei Mei. Early Miyoshi Umeki was mainly influenced by traditional Japanese kabuki and American pop music. Miyoshi Umeki met one of her favorite American singers, Billy Ecclestone, at the film festival.
Acting career
Miyoshi Umeki joined the singing company RCARecords from 1950 to 1954 and performed in the film Seishunjazumusu. Her American jazz music also has a unique performance. At that time, she sang jazz music in English and Japanese or only one of them. The songs she sang during this period include It's Not Fair, Sentimental Me, My Heart, My Heart, Once, VayaConDios, How much is that dog and I will walk alone. Miyoshi Umeki later moved to the United States on 1955 and performed in ArthurGodfrey (she was the main actress of the season). She also signed a contract with MercuryRecords and released several singles and two albums.
Mei Mei's performance in Godfrey attracted the attention of director joshua logan, and prompted her to appear in the film Love of Sakura Flowers. Miyoshi Umeki also won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Love among Sakura Flowers, becoming the first Asian artist to win an Oscar. She later sang "HowDeepIstheOcean" in the NBC variety show "TheGiseleMacKenzieShow" from 65438 to 0958.
1958, she also won the Tony Award for Best Musical Actress for her Broadway premiere of the musical Flower Drum Opera. The musical was also shown for two years. private life
Miyoshi Umeki married TV director WynnOpie in 1958, but finally divorced in 1967. But she immediately married director RandallHood at 1968, had a son Michael, and ran a company in Los Angeles, which rented equipment to production companies and university film courses. RandallHood later died in 1976. Miyoshi Umeki lived in northern Hollywood for a long time in his early years, but later he moved to Missouri because of his son. On August 28th, 2007, she died of cancer in a nursing home in Lick, Missouri.
