The custom of Chinese New Year in Guangdong
Prepare new clothes
Well-off, new clothes, new shoes and socks in New Pants are all new; Those who are not rich can't buy all the new clothes, but at least they should have a new coat. This custom is very special among Huizhou people. Some old people take old clothes worn last year or coarse cloth for other purposes to the dyehouse for re-dyeing, and sew a skirt by themselves, which is also called new clothes. The reason for this habit is not recorded in detail, but it is related to the "sweeping dust" before the festival, which should be derived from it, meaning "praying for a safe New Year". According to Huizhou folks, if you put on new clothes in the New Year, you will have good luck in the coming year. If you don't wear new clothes, next year will be bad.
Washing is not clean
There is a saying in Guangdong called "twenty-eight-year-old, washing sloppy", which means that the whole family should stay at home and clean up on this day to welcome the New Year. This was originally a New Year custom of Guangfu people, but it has profoundly affected the whole of Guangdong, and everyone has * * *. This day is a general cleaning, sweeping away the dust for a whole year, and removing the bad luck for a whole year.
Take a bath with grapefruit leaves
Picking pomelo leaves in the morning, after noon, every household puts pomelo leaves in the pot to boil, and everyone has to take a hot bath of pomelo leaves, which means to wash away the filth, "poor gas" and "stale gas" and enter the new year cleanly. After washing pomelo leaves, put on new clothes, hats, socks and shoes, and look brand-new from head to toe. Wash dirty clothes on the same day. Therefore, washing pomelo leaves and taking a bath contains the meaning of old cloth and new one. This custom is getting weaker every year.
Post Spring Festival couplets and New Year pictures.
Red Spring Festival couplets are pasted on the front and back doors, "Li" is pasted on the lintel, and the words "Fu" and "Auspicious" are pasted on the door panel. Kitchen, cowshed, pigsty, henhouse, toilet, etc. It should also be affixed with a "peach symbol" on red paper, and the words "Prosperous fortune, prosperous Ding" and "prosperous six animals" are written on the red paper. The hall, bedroom and guest room are all pasted with New Year pictures, which is a happy scene.
Worship ancestors
After breakfast on the thirtieth day of the twelfth lunar month, anyone who added men in those days would send someone to the ancestral temple to clean and paint the walls of the ancestral temple. In the afternoon, people went to the ancestral temple with gifts such as gift boxes, three sacrifices, firecrackers and gold ingots. After the salute, firecrackers and some spears were set off. Every New Year's Eve afternoon, the ancestral hall is filled with incense and firecrackers continue until dusk. This custom has gradually disappeared in recent years.
