The solstice in winter is one of the four major festivals and eight major festivals in China. It is considered as a big festival in winter. In ancient times, there was a folk saying that the winter solstice was as big as a year. The custom of winter solstice varies from region to region, and there are also differences in content or details. In southern China, there are customs of ancestor worship and winter solstice feast. In northern China, it is a custom to eat jiaozi from winter to Sunday every year.

Legend has it that when St. Zhang Zhongjing returned to his hometown in his later years and saw those people suffering from cold, he made a medicine called Quhan Joule Decoction, mutton, some medicinal materials and noodles in the shape of ears for people to eat. Later, on the solstice of winter, people imitated it to eat.
2. Brewing; Gusu area attaches great importance to this solar term. There is a proverb in Suzhou: the solstice in winter is a new year. On the eve of the winter solstice, the traditional Gusu people will drink winter wine, which is a kind of rice wine brewed with osmanthus flowers and has a pleasant aroma.
On the night of winter solstice, Gusu people drink winter wine, accompanied by stewed beef, mutton and other stews. In the cold winter, wine-making can not only keep out the cold, but also express Gusu people's yearning for a better life.
