What's the climate like in Italy?

There are three main climates in Italy: plateau mountain climate, temperate continental climate and Mediterranean climate.

Italy is dominated by mountains and hills (4/5), with Alps in the north, Po Plain in the south and Apennines in the south-central. There are many volcanic earthquakes in the Apennines, such as Mount Vesuvius and Mount Etna (the largest active volcano in Europe).

Plateau mountain climate: mainly distributed in the northern Alps, with the increase of altitude, the temperature gradually decreases. At the southern foot of the mountain range, the climate in this area is mild because the mountain range blocks the cold current in northern Europe, and the rivers and lakes are densely covered, which can adjust the climate.

Temperate continental climate: mainly distributed in the south side of Alps, it is hot in summer, cold in winter, humid in climate and often foggy in winter.

Mediterranean climate: mainly distributed in the southern peninsula and islands, with hot and dry summers and mild and rainy winters.

The topography of Italy

Italy, located on the northern shore of the Mediterranean, is mainly composed of Apennine Peninsula, Sicily and Sardinia, and also includes two micro-countries (San Marino and Vatican).
