The Historical Origin of Wuhu Dialect
The formation of Jianghuai Mandarin can be traced back to the Wei and Jin Dynasties. After Yongjia's funeral, a large number of northern Han people moved south into the Jianghuai area. Due to the advantages of northern immigrants in population, politics, economy and culture, the northern dialect gradually replaced the local Wu dialect. In the long river of history, the northern dialect that later entered the region merged with the replaced Wu dialect to form today's Jianghuai Mandarin, while Wuhu area is a typical mixed area of Jianghuai Mandarin and Wu dialect, forming a local language feature that Mandarin is mixed with Wu dialect in urban areas and Wu dialect is spoken in suburbs and towns.
