Translation:
When I stayed at Handan Inn, it happened to be the solstice festival in winter. At night, I sit in front of the lamp with my knees in my arms, and only the shadow is with me. I believe my relatives will gather late at night today, and they should also talk about me as a traveler.
This poem was written at the end of the twentieth year of Zhenyuan in Tang Dezong (804). The author is thirty-three years old and is the secretary of the provincial school. On the solstice of winter, the court will have a holiday, and the people are also very lively, wearing new clothes, giving each other food and drink, congratulating each other and celebrating the festival. Bai Juyi was on a business trip and stayed in Handan Post Office for one night, so he wrote this poem out of emotion.
