Cold at the end of the year means that the last period of the year is very cold, and everyone goes to keep warm together.

The Great Cold is the last of the 24 solar terms. Great cold, like slight cold, is also a solar term indicating the cold weather. Great cold refers to extremely cold weather. According to the long-term meteorological records in China, there is no slight cold in the great cold solar terms in the north, but for most areas in the south, the coldest is in the great cold solar terms.

The great cold comes at the end of the year, winter goes to spring, and after the great cold, a new cycle begins. In some parts of China, during the period from the Great Cold to beginning of spring, there were many important folk customs, such as taking off old cloth, making bacon, offering sacrifices to stoves and ending sumptuous food.

Although the winter solstice solar terms are the lowest in the northern hemisphere, the coldest time of the year is the slight cold and great cold solar terms after the winter solstice solar terms, especially the great cold solar terms.

This is because after the solar term of winter solstice, the direct sunlight point will gradually move northward, but for a period of time, the direct sunlight point will always be in the southern hemisphere, and the heat in the northern hemisphere will always be lost, and the heat absorbed during the day is still less than the heat released at night.

Meteorological changes:

During the severe cold solar term, the atmospheric circulation is relatively stable, and the adjustment period of circulation is about 20 days. In this circulation adjustment process, there will often be a wide range of rain and snow weather and strong winds to cool down. When the west of 80 degrees east longitude is a long wave ridge and East Asia is a coastal trough, under the influence of northwest wind and constantly supplemented cold air, China will have a sustained low temperature.

In some parts of China, severe cold is not as cold as slight cold, but in the southern coastal areas of China, the lowest temperature in a year appears in the severe cold solar terms.
