Datong is located in the northernmost part of Shanxi Province, east longitude11234'-1433', north latitude 39 03'-40 44'. It is bounded by the Great Wall in the north, adjacent to Xinghe County, fengzhen city County and Liangcheng County in Wulanchabu City, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, connected to Youyu County, Huairen County and Yingxian County in Shuozhou City and Fan Shi in Xinzhou City in the west and south, and connected to Huai 'an County, Yangyuan County and Yuxian County in Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province and Laiyuan County and Fuping County in Baoding City in the east. The mileage of the expressway is about 330 kilometers from Beijing to Taiyuan. It is the barrier of the capital, the gateway of northern Shanxi and the throat of Shanxi, Hebei and Mongolia. Climate; Datong is located in the temperate continental monsoon climate zone, affected by the monsoon, with four distinct seasons.

Datong, called Yunzhong and Pingcheng in ancient times, was once the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, and Liao and Jin were the capitals. There are many historical sites in the territory, including Yungang Grottoes, Huayan Temple, Shanhua Temple, Hengshan Hanging Temple and Jiulong Wall.
