Sichuan Nanchong folk custom

The folk customs in Nanchong, Sichuan are: Toad Festival.

"Toad Festival" is the 14th day of the first lunar month. At this time, around beginning of spring, a large number of germs began to multiply, and children with low immunity were prone to get sick. At the same time, everything in nature revived, and frogs, as amphibians, were extremely active in mating and reproduction, and frogs croaked after the fourteenth day of the first month.

In the era of lack of scientific and technological knowledge, ancestors associated diseases with croaking frogs, hoping to drive away frogs, diseases and children's healthy growth. The activities of the Frog Festival are spontaneously organized by local people and are preserved year after year. Now this folk custom has been passed down from generation to generation by local villagers. 20 1 1, this folk activity was listed in Nanchong intangible cultural heritage list.

The origin of toad festival

People have different opinions about the origin of "Toad Festival". Although they don't know which is true and which is false, Toad Day represents people driving away evil and bringing good wishes. According to legend, when Zhang was stationed in northern Sichuan in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, he was besieged by officers and men, causing numerous casualties. Many soldiers were buried behind Wudong Bridge, hence the local name "Zhang Guan Tomb".

However, perennial wars have led to plagues. Although the people sacrificed the pig's head and three beasts to the nearby temples to burn money and turn paper into paper, it didn't help. Later, the local villagers survived under the guidance of monks. Later, on the 14th day of the first month, people will hold homemade frog lanterns and dance with dragons. In this way, they will hold a grand sacrifice ceremony to pray for the protection of the river god and drive away the frog disaster.

After using this method, the plague is no longer rampant, but this custom has continued, which is the source of Toad Festival.
