Fishing is a fishing activity. By extension, the word fishing is also applicable to hunting other aquatic animals, such as various shellfish, squid, octopus, turtle, frog and some edible marine invertebrates. The word fishing usually does not apply to hunting aquatic mammals such as whales. Fishing is an ancient worldwide activity with many technologies and traditions, which has changed with the development of modern technology.

Fishing is a very old activity, which can be traced back at least to the Mesolithic Age about 10000 years ago. We know from the archaeological features such as shells [1], abandoned fish bones and cave murals that seafood is very important and consumes a lot. During this period, most people lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle and inevitably moved constantly. However, in some early permanent residential areas (although not necessarily permanent), such as Lepenski Vir, they are almost always associated with fisheries as the main food source.

Neolithic culture and technology spread around the world about 8,000 to 4,000 years ago. With the emergence of new agricultural and pottery techniques, the basic forms of most fishing methods known today have emerged.

Fishing may even precede the development of modern human beings. There is a controversial proposal called the aquatic ape hypothesis, which suggests that the ancestors of modern humans lived in a semi-aquatic environment for one or more periods, and they collected most of their food from coastal or other waters before their descendants returned to a more land-based existence.
