The Cold Clothes Festival, also known as October Festival and Autumn Festival, originated from the story of Meng Jiangnu who traveled long distances to find her husband to send cold clothes. People will put on clothes to avoid the cold and give their parents and lovers clothes to keep out the cold. After the Cold Clothes Festival, it means that the weather will get colder and colder. Tomb-Sweeping Day, also known as Cold Food Festival and Walking Festival, is a folk festival to worship ancestors. On this day, people will sweep graves for their dead relatives, organize outings, plant trees and other activities.

Tomb-Sweeping Day is one of the twenty-four solar terms in the China lunar calendar, usually around April 4th and 5th in the Gregorian calendar. The Cold Food Festival is a folk festival, which originated from the story that Jiezi Tuining, a minister in the Spring and Autumn Period, was burned to death on Mianshan Mountain in Jiexiu, Shanxi Province, and refused to go down the mountain to be sealed.

Before the Tang Dynasty, Cold Food Festival and Tomb-Sweeping Day were two consecutive festivals with different themes. The former mourns the past and the latter seeks new life. There are many versions of the origin of Hanyi Festival. The earliest festival came from the Wax Festival in the Zhou Dynasty, on which a grand sacrifice was held. Later, some people said it came from the Qin Dynasty. About the origin of Tomb-Sweeping Day, it is said that when Zhong Er, Jin Wengong, was in exile, Jiezitui cut a piece of meat from his thigh and cooked soup for Zhong Er. To commemorate meson push, Jin Wengong designated this day as Tomb-Sweeping Day.
