In ancient times, the Shen Shi family was regarded as a noble, but its descendants were more complicated and less noble.

Shen surnames mainly come from Ji surnames, Mi surnames, Yi surnames and Won surnames. Shen Shi is a typical multi-ethnic, multi-origin surname, which is a derivative surname of Yao. After Ji Jizhai, the tenth son of Zhou Wenwang, it belongs to the national title.

Shen is usually regarded as a descendant of the Yellow Emperor, because the Shen Shi family originated from the stone god, the son of the great-grandson of the ancient Yellow Emperor.
