What is a collage?

Collage is a decorative art made of various materials. In China, collage belongs to the category of arts and crafts. The commonly used materials are shells, feathers, bark, cloth, fur, medulla tetrapanacis and wheat straw. China's collage develops with the origin of materials. For example, shell mosaics are produced in coastal areas, feather stickers are mainly produced in Northeast China and Shandong, fur stickers are produced in Inner Mongolia, bark stickers are produced in Northeast China, and wheat straw stickers are produced in Northeast China and Hebei. These collages give full play to the characteristics of colors, textures and other materials, and have national characteristics and decorative beauty. In the west, collage belongs to the category of modernist art. In the west, collage often attaches some incidental materials, such as newspaper fragments, cloth pieces and wallpaper, to drawing boards, canvases or other textures, and sometimes it is combined with painting. At the beginning of the 20th century, Picasso and Braque developed collage into an important aspect of cubism. By the 1960s, collage had become an important form of popular art.
