When is the best time for mulberry grafting?
When the temperature gets warmer in spring, the sap of the rootstock begins to flow, and the cortex and xylem are easily separated, grafting can begin. Generally, the suitable grafting period in Jiangsu and Zhejiang silkworm areas is from mid-March to early April, and other areas should be determined according to the local climate characteristics; To the south, the grafting time is early; Going north, the grafting time is delayed. During this period, the cambium protocells of the rootstock have split to produce cambium area, and the cortex is easy to pinch open for grafting. After transplantation, there is less bleeding, faster healing and higher survival rate. Grafting is too early, the cortex of rootstock is not easy to pinch open, and scion insertion is difficult; Grafting is too late, the temperature rises, the rootstock juice flows vigorously, and the scion loses water or germinates because of long storage time, which will reduce the grafting survival rate. In addition, according to the germination period of different mulberry varieties, the order should be arranged reasonably, and the early germination should be grafted first and the late germination should be grafted later.
