What is the explanation of lung in TCM?

(1) Lung governs qi: The "qi" here has two meanings. One refers to the breath; One refers to the "true qi" (vitality) of the human body. When the lungs are sick, the most common things are coughing and wheezing, so it is obvious that the lungs control breathing. As for the so-called "true qi", it is the fundamental qi of human beings, sometimes called "primordial qi". The ancients believed that essence, qi and spirit were the three treasures of the human body. It can be seen that human qi is a very important substance.

(2) The lung assists the heart and participates in festivals: Su Wen said: "The heart is the official of the monarch ... the lung is the official of Fu, and the festival is ruled." He also said, "The heart is full of pulses." That is to say, the lung can assist the heart, dominate the blood circulation of the human body, and has the function of governance and regulation, which clearly points out that the lung and the heart have a close relationship-the heart governs blood and the lung governs gas, so there are some sayings in later generations, such as "Qi is handsome for blood, and Qi is good for blood" and "Blood is insufficient for qi, but blood reaches qi", so when treating various blood diseases, it is often more than just treating blood.

(3) The lungs are covered with fur. Horrible musculocutaneous skin, lung and musculocutaneous skin are closely related. For example, lung deficiency will weaken the adaptability of fur and make it easy to catch a cold. Another example is patients with exogenous fever, anhidrosis and cough and asthma. During the treatment, they used the method of relieving exterior symptoms and sweating to drive away evil spirits and get out of the fur. After sweating, their fever will go down.

(4) The lung opens in the nose. The lungs breathe, and the nose is the gateway for breathing in and out. If the lungs are diseased, it will affect the nose. Su Wen said: "In the dirty, it is the lung, ... in the orifices, it is the nose." Therefore, when the lungs are attacked by cold air, there will be nasal congestion and runny nose, and the smell is not fragrant.

(5) The relationship between lung and sound: pathological changes in lung often affect the change of sound, even the sound can't be emitted. For example, patients with colds, coughs and excessive phlegm often have hoarse voices. This shows that sound is closely related to the lungs.

(6) Lung governs autumn: "Su Wen" says: "Lung, ... is the big yin in the yang, which is connected with autumn." It shows that the lung is in harmony with the autumn climate, and autumn is the commander-in-chief of dry gold. The climate is cold and the lung is combined. Therefore, whenever the climate in autumn is dry, diseases such as nasal congestion, sore throat, cough and chest pain are often seen, which is the concrete manifestation of lung governing autumn.
