Two contacts (or contacts) of the throttle position sensor are linked with the throttle shaft, one contact can slide on the resistor, and the throttle position signal is converted into voltage VTA through the change of the resistor. The voltage changes linearly, so the sensor is called linear output throttle position sensor. The function of the throttle position sensor is to convert the position or opening of the throttle into a voltage signal, which is transmitted to the electronic control unit as the basis for the electronic control unit to judge the engine working condition and realize the adjustment of the fuel injection quantity under different throttle opening. There are three types of throttle position sensors: linear, switch and integrated (switch and linear variable resistor). The throttle position sensor is installed on the throttle body and linked with the throttle. There is a sliding potentiometer inside the throttle position sensor, and its sliding contact is driven by the throttle shaft. If the resistance of potentiometer is different with different throttle opening, the throttle opening will be converted into resistance or voltage signal and sent to microcomputer. Through the throttle position sensor, the microcomputer can obtain the analog signal representing the continuous change of all throttle opening from fully closed to fully open, and the change rate of throttle opening, so as to judge the working condition of the engine more accurately and improve the adjustment accuracy and effect. In order to accurately check the signal of idle state (throttle fully closed state), the integrated throttle position sensor has an idle contact. When the throttle valve is completely closed, the idle output contact is turned on and the sensor outputs an idle signal. At this time, ECU will instruct the fuel injector to increase the fuel injection quantity to enrich the mixture.
