The implication of eating black rice in long summer
The custom of eating black rice in the long summer originated from the war between Sun Bin and Pang Juan during the Warring States Period. They studied together under Guiguzi's door, but Pang Juan was jealous of Sun Bin's talent and hurt him. Finally, Sun Bin was put into a pigsty and tortured in every way. In order to cheat Pang Juan's survival, Sun Bin pretended to be crazy, cooked with black leaves, and jiaozi, who was kneaded into pig manure, cheated Pang Juan. Eating black rice can dispel wind and detoxify and prevent mosquito bites, and people believe that eating black rice will protect people's safety and happiness in the long summer.
Black rice is a kind of folk food, which was produced in the Tang Dynasty. In rural areas of Yixing, Liyang, Jintan and southern Anhui, it has become a custom for most people to cook black rice with the leaves of Vaccinium bracteatum on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month. Only some areas eat it in Tomb-Sweeping Day, while others eat it in the long summer.
