How to adjust the valve clearance is a problem mentioned by many beginners of automobile maintenance. In fact, adjusting the valve clearance is not as difficult as expected. Just follow the steps step by step. Service tip: It is appropriate to adjust the valve when the engine is cold (probably when the cylinder head temperature is lower than 40). The specific steps are as follows: Step 1: Remove the valve cover. Step 2: Place the 1 piston at the top dead center (TDC). The "UP" mark A on the camshaft sprocket should be located at the top, and the TDC slot B on the camshaft sprocket should be aligned with the upper edge (bottom) of the cylinder head. Step 3: Check the valve and select the clearance gauge with appropriate thickness (as follows) (the specific clearance varies with different models, please refer to the maintenance manual). For example, the valve clearance of Honda Accord engine is 0. 18~0.22mm for intake and 0.23~0.27mm for exhaust. Step 4: Insert the feeler gauge A between the adjusting screw and the valve stem end of cylinder 1 and slide it back and forth. You should feel a slight resistance (below). Step 5: If the resistance is too large or too small, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjusting screw A until the resistance of the feeler gauge is appropriate (below). Step 6: Tighten the lock nut and recheck the clearance. Repeat the adjustment if necessary. Step 7: Tighten the lock nut to the specified torque and recheck the valve clearance. Repeat the adjustment if necessary. Step 8: Rotate the crankshaft clockwise. Align TDC slot A of No.3 piston on camshaft sprocket with the top edge of cylinder head (below). Step 9: If necessary, check and adjust the valve lash of No.3 cylinder. Step 10: Turn the crankshaft clockwise. Align TDC slot A of No.4 piston on camshaft sprocket with the top edge of cylinder head (below). Step 1 1: If necessary, check and adjust the valve lash of No.4 cylinder. Step 12: Turn the crankshaft clockwise. Align TDC slot A of No.2 piston on camshaft sprocket with the top edge of cylinder head (below). Step 13: If necessary, check and adjust the valve lash of No.2 cylinder. Step 14: Install the valve cover after adjusting the valve clearance.
