1, the reason of Torch Festival
About the reason of Torch Festival, the main legend of Dali Bai nationality is to commemorate the bravery and wisdom of Mrs. Bai Jie. Legend has it that 1300 years ago, in order to annex the other five imperial edicts (small kingdoms) in Erhai area, Pirog, king of Nanzhao, invited the leaders of the other five imperial edicts in the name of ancestor worship, and then set fire to the Songming Pagoda.
Among them, Mrs. Bai Jie, the wife of Huang Deng, is far-sighted, unpredictable beforehand and faithful afterwards. Moreover, in order to dig her husband's bones, all ten fingers were bleeding, so young Bai women should dye their nails red to commemorate the Torch Festival.
2. The custom of Torch Festival
On the Torch Festival, every village or district should erect a big torch, insert colorful banners and hang "Torch Fruit". The top is also decorated with a large symbol of the Torch Festival-"Shengdou" printed with the words "peaceful country and safe people" and "good weather".
When the flame rises, men, women and children are singing and dancing around the torch tree, and children are scrambling for the burning torch fruit, which means welcoming good luck and receiving happiness. In addition, adults will cut off the colorful ropes brought by children and burn them with torches during the Dragon Boat Festival, which means to ward off evil spirits and seek peace.
The climax of the Torch Festival is playing with torches, so they compete to play with each other and are beaming. After the excitement, young people will rush to the field with small torches, sprinkle rosin powder on the torches and shine on the ears of grain, which means eliminating pests and diseases and ensuring a bumper harvest.
