The origin of Tomb-Sweeping Day on April 5th.
Qingming began in the Zhou Dynasty and has a history of more than 2,500 years. At first, Qingming only represented a solar term, and the time was around April 5 of the solar calendar every year. Before and after Tomb-Sweeping Day, the rain increased and the temperature rose, which is a good time for spring ploughing and sowing. Therefore, there is an agricultural proverb "Before and after Qingming Festival, plant melons and beans" and "Planting trees is not as good as Tomb-Sweeping Day".
Tomb-Sweeping Day has become a festival to commemorate ancestors, which is related to the Cold Food Festival. At that time, people were sweeping graves to worship their ancestors at the Cold Food Festival, which was very close to the Qingming Festival, so in the Song and Yuan Dynasties, Tomb-Sweeping Day gradually replaced the Cold Food Festival. This not only shows that grave-sweeping, ancestor worship and other ceremonies are mostly held in Qingming Festival, but the original customs and activities such as cold food, cuju and swinging at Cold Food Festival have also been taken over by Tomb-Sweeping Day, and Cold Food Festival has become another name for Qingming Festival.
Customs in Tomb-Sweeping Day:
1, ancestor worship and grave sweeping: Tomb-Sweeping Day is one of the four traditional festivals in China, and it is the day to worship ancestors and sweep graves.
2. Eating dumplings: dumplings are a snack in the south of the Yangtze River and the most festive food in Tomb-Sweeping Day. It is a kind of wormwood that only existed before and after Tomb-Sweeping Day. It is a jiaozi made of glutinous rice flour and soup. Because jiaozi is bright green, it is named Youth League.
3. Swing: The custom of swinging in Tomb-Sweeping Day has a long history. It was originally called Qian Qiu, but later it was changed to Swing. The earliest swings were usually made of branches and then tied with ribbons. Later it gradually developed into a swing made of two ropes and pedals. The custom of swinging has been passed down to this day and is deeply loved by people.
