Fuzhou paper umbrellas have a history of nearly 1,000 years, imported from the Central Plains in the late Tang Dynasty, and then gradually formed a unique style. The craftsmanship is exquisite, the shape is beautiful, lightweight and durable, and the local color is rich. The umbrella bone is made of old bamboo from deep mountains, which is strictly protected against moth, mildew and corrosion, and coated with black lacquer; and the umbrella surface is made of special cotton paper, which is refined through a number of processes, such as moth-proofing, paper pasting, flower painting, oiling, and assembling, etc. The umbrellas are also made of high quality cotton paper, which is used in the manufacture of the umbrellas.
The lacquer painting uses lacquer as pigment, and utilizes the techniques of lacquer ware, especially the decorative techniques of Fuzhou's decalcified lacquer ware, to paint and grind the paintings layer by layer, which is a unique art and craft in Fuzhou. On the basis of traditional lacquer painting techniques, Fuzhou lacquer painting is made by combining the production methods of local decalcified lacquer wares, organically combining "painting" and "grinding", so that the paintings produced are characterized by bright and deep tones, strong three-dimensionality, and smooth and glossy surfaces, etc.
