In order to kill time, the family get together to talk and pray for a safe night. After a long time, it formed the custom of not sleeping for a year on New Year's Eve.

There is also the theory of protecting the elderly from evil spirits and diseases. Legend has it that evil spirits and plague viruses are afraid of light and fire, so people light up and set off firecrackers on New Year's Eve, just to drive away the evil diseases that are not good for people.
