Characteristics of Rural Social Modernization in China

Due to the lack of strong motivation, large population, backward economy, strong traditional culture and institutional reasons, the modernization process of rural society in China is quite slow.

Second, the modernization process is unbalanced.

Due to historical tradition and geographical reasons, the modernization process of rural areas in the eastern coastal areas of China is still obviously faster than that in the central and western regions. In addition, from the same region, the economic and social development of villages near urban and rural areas is faster than that of villages far away from urban and rural areas. Therefore, the process of rural social modernization presents a complex unbalanced pattern.

Third, modernization is not harmonious. As mentioned above, social modernization is a process of social change with many contents, and each part may be coordinated or out of balance. Because the modernization process of rural society in China is relatively late, and rural modernization since 1980s has appeared in the form of developing economy and relaxing rural management, rural social modernization is obviously uncoordinated. The process of economic modernization is fast and the lifestyle modernization is obvious, but the political democratization is slow and the values of rural residents are complex.
