HDI for short was put forward by the United Nations Development Programme in Human Development Report 1990. The human development index, like the material quality of life index and social progress index, is the result of challenging the traditional GNP index.

The human development index is calculated according to three indicators: health and life expectancy, measured by life expectancy at birth; Adult literacy rate (2/3 weight) and comprehensive enrollment rate of primary schools, middle schools and universities (1/3 weight) * * *; Living standards are measured by real GDP (purchasing power parity per capita (purchasing power parity dollars)).

In order to build indexes, minimum and maximum values are set for each index:

Life expectancy at birth: 25 years and 85 years;

Adult literacy rate: 0% and100%;

Comprehensive gross enrollment rate: 0% and100%;

Real GDP(PPP capita (PPP USD): 100 USD and 40,000 USD;

For any component of the human development index, the index can be calculated by the following formula:
