Tools needed for wood carving: carving knife
When carving wood, the right tools are also the key. There are two main types of carving knives used for wood carving. One is Weng tube blank knife, which is what we often call leather knife. The other is a strip-shaped smoothing knife, which is mainly used to smooth and dig thin blanks. Subdivision can be divided into round knives, flat knives, oblique knives, jade knives, medium steel knives and triangular knives.
The first type: round knife
The blade of the circular knife is curved, which is used to handle circular carving. For example, the carving of flowers, the round surfaces of leaves, branches and petals are all treated with round knives.
The second type: flat knife
Flat knives are used to treat wood to make the wood surface smoother, and can also be used for scoring and chiseling.
The third type: oblique knife
Oblique knife is a special kind of knife with a 45-degree blade, which is mainly used for polishing and processing details.
The fourth type: Yuwandao
Jade knife, also known as butterfly chisel, is a smooth knife between flat knife and round knife, especially suitable for concave surface.
Fifth: medium steel knife
Medium steel knife, also known as printing knife, has inclined planes on both sides of the blade, which is mainly used for pattern carving on clothing.
Sixth type: triangle knife
The blade of triangular knife is triangular, which is mainly used for haircut. It is a very meticulous tool.
Matters needing attention in wood carving material selection:
When choosing wood carving materials, we should choose wood with tough wood, fine texture and bright color. For example, mahogany, rosewood, boxwood and flat mahogany are all excellent wood suitable for carving. For wood carving workers who have just started, it is more appropriate to choose softer wood, such as camphor wood, ginkgo wood, pine wood, etc., which are all easier to use.
For novice woodcarvers, we should pay great attention to the choice of carving knives and wood. Only on the basis of fully understanding the tools and wood used can it be easier to get started and master the technology of wood carving.
