Prose in Song Dynasty developed from the ancient prose movement advocated by Han Yu and Liu Zongyuan in Tang Dynasty. Liu Kai first advocated ancient prose in the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty. Shi Jie lashed out at "Western learning spreading to the east" in "Singularity".
