Yip Man (葉問) is a modern Chinese martial artist and Wing Chun master.

Yip Man (葉問, October 1, 1893 - December 1, 1972) was a modern Chinese martial artist and Wing Chun master.

He was born in Sang Yuen, Nanhai, Foshan, Guangdong, formerly known as Yip Ji-man and once known as Yip Yat, and was originally from Sang Yuen, Nanhai County, Guangdong Province. He studied under the tutelage of Chan Wah Shun and Leung Bik, and learned the art of Wing Chun under Chan Wah Shun. With outstanding achievements and profound attainments in the field of Wing Chun, Yip Man is regarded as the patriarch of Chinese Wing Chun.

Ip Man's martial arts career can be traced back to his childhood. Due to his weak health and frequent illnesses, Ip Man was encouraged by his family to start learning martial arts.

He first learned the art of Wing Chun under Chan Wah Shun, and after Chan Wah Shun fell ill and died, Ip Man practiced hard for three years under his senior brother, Ng Chung So. Later, while attending St. Stephen's School in Hong Kong, he met Mr. Leung Bik, son of Mr. Leung Tsan, and practiced Wing Chun with him.

Ip Man became the captain, chief inspector and acting chief of the criminal investigation team of the Foshan Police Department. 1949, Ip Man left Foshan and settled in Hong Kong, where he became the colonel captain of the Southern District Patrol of the Guangzhou Garrison Command.

In the field of martial arts, Ip Man had great achievements and reputation. He excelled in the art of Wing Chun and carried it forward, attracting many disciples. He is known as a master of his generation for his exquisite martial arts skills and profound attainments in boxing.

While serving as captain, inspector general and acting chief of the Foshan Police Department's Criminal Investigation Squad, Ip Man also utilized his martial arts skills to beat up the provocations of the foreigners on many occasions, and repeatedly helped other Chinese students.

Besides his achievements in the field of martial arts, Ip Man was also a martial artist who loved his country and cared about the spirit of the nation. He continued to study martial arts despite his country's poverty and small stature, and repeatedly utilized his martial arts skills to bring glory to his country. His martial arts schools are located all over Hong Kong and Guangdong, and those who practiced martial arts with him are from all walks of life, including many foreign students.

Ip Man died in Hong Kong in 1972 at the age of 79. His death brought a great loss to the martial arts community. However, his deeds and martial arts spirit have been celebrated and passed on.
