How to integrate Wushu routines into actual combat

That's a good question. I don't think I can fully interpret it. The following excerpt is from Mr. Chang Yugang, an octupole martial artist, for your study.

What I know about the Eight-pole Boxing Small Frame —— Discussion with Mr. Han Qi

In the ninth issue of China Wushu in 2005, Mr. Han Qi published an article entitled "I see the small framework of Bajiquan". The general idea of the article is that there is a small box in the routine of Bajiquan, which is time-consuming and laborious and has no practical significance. As a result, it can only get twice the result with half the effort, or even do something useless. The article said: "Even if he practiced for three or four years, or even more than ten or eight years, can he practice his real skills in actual combat?" Han Qi's article not only has this view on Bajiquan, but also has the same view on Xingyiquan and Bagua Palm. He said, "He has been wallowing in octupole boxing for twenty-four years, and he has never seen his fighting skills sublimate again and again." In addition, I don't know where he got a sentence from teacher Wu Lianzhi seven years ago: "Because of the long-term influence of routines, China Wushu has taken many detours in attack and defense, which is not as rigorous and scientific as boxing training."

When writing this article, my teacher Wu Lianzhi sat next to me. I asked my teacher if he had said such a thing seven years ago, and he answered "No" in the affirmative. He said that he probably said something like this in the past: "At present, although the model martial arts in China are rooted in traditional martial arts, they are biased in the development process, and the routines blindly pursue difficult somersaults and jumps. After one punch, it is difficult to see the attack with one punch and one palm, which is not in line with the original intention of China traditional martial arts, and it is not convenient to spread widely. Otherwise, you will lose the tradition of China Wushu. " He also said: "China Wushu is very good, but the focus should be on health and fitness and the use of Wushu. Any aspect is not desirable. "

As an influential martial arts master, Mr. Wu's opinion is pertinent. However, Mr. Han Qi changed the original intention of Mr. Wu's speech, which was impolite and violated the rigor of academic contention.

At present, there are two wrong tendencies in our understanding of traditional Wushu: one is the mechanical "routine uselessness"; The other is the theory of routine use. I don't think these two statements are desirable, because they objectively violate the laws of dialectical materialism and make metaphysical mistakes.

"Metaphysics of Routine" and "Usage of Routine" of Machinery

Wushu is a skill and a culture. It branded the arduous course of China's civilization and progress for thousands of years from a certain aspect, and it is a rare spiritual and cultural wealth of the Chinese nation. However, the development of Wushu is not perfect. An idea, an idea and a scientific problem should not only exist independently, but also be constantly summarized and improved. In study and practice, we should discard the essence and keep the falsehood. This non-static enrichment and improvement is the cornerstone of success.

I tell two stories that happened to me before, aiming at the "mystery theory of routines" and "usage theory of routines" of machinery.

One. It is said that once upon a time there was a boxer who learned octupole boxing. He is very strong, and he also practices kung fu very well. People in three townships and five villages gave him thumbs-up and praised his kung fu. One day, when the farm was resting, everyone got together to chat. Speaking of martial arts, martial arts practitioners will talk a lot and show a sense of arrogance. Just as he was in high spirits, a young man suddenly stood up in the crowd and said to the martial arts practitioner, we know that you are good at kung fu. Can you show us your hands in front of everyone? People who practice martial arts are unhappy, feel that they are valuable, and it is meaningless to practice in front of these people who don't know martial arts. At this time, everyone was booing at the same time, but the martial arts people couldn't stand it, so they stood up and squatted down with their elbows closed in a stance of "horse stance just look", saying that this posture could see the sky from above, the ground from below and the eyes in all directions, even if Zhang Fei was alive. Young people don't believe that martial arts practitioners say they can go forward and have a competition. Suddenly, the young man punched the martial artist in the chest, and the martial artist fell to the ground. The martial artist was puzzled and tried again and again, but he still closed his elbow and focused on the young man's front horizontal fist. Unexpectedly, the young man came to sweep his legs and fell to the ground. Everyone laughed. ...

Second. It is said that there is a martial arts idiot who arbitrarily transforms the classic martial arts routines handed down from his predecessors, euphemistically calling it "for actual combat." His improved routine should be step by step, with hands and without hands, shaking his shoulders and neck, shaking his head. In fact, this is a taboo of martial arts, but he stubbornly regards it as a treasure of martial arts in actual combat. In his imagination, only such martial arts are the best. When teaching students, they mistake feeding and beating for actual combat, and students also believe in the routine that the teacher improves at will, and always feel that this is the highest realm of martial arts. One day, a competition was held, and these students who had never worn martial arts gloves signed up with confidence under the guidance of their teachers. After several rounds, the students were defeated, and the teachers and students were puzzled and speechless.

The purpose of telling the above two stories is to remind everyone that the former is to copy the "truth" taught by the teacher without analyzing the content learned. As we all know, although the content of the predecessor education is good, it also has limitations. Everyone has a different level of understanding, personality and physical condition, which should be different in practical application. They should learn to absorb selectively and find their own training methods and styles in repeated practice and martial arts training, otherwise they will make the mistake of copying and blindly worshipping. The latter, without starting from the foundation, denied it before actually entering the martial arts school. Although bold reform, but ultimately can not jump out of the circle of routine theory, the result is still vulnerable.

On "Useless Conventionalism"

Routine is an important means of Wushu training in China and a basic skill. Through routine training, we can not only trace back the history and seek the technical characteristics and style of this kind of kung fu, but also understand the cultural implication of each Sanshou movement through routine arrangement and combination when predecessors created boxing, and also achieve the purpose of strengthening the body through routine skill practice. It can be said that routine is an important carrier of the existence of China Wushu.

Due to different cultural backgrounds and ideal goals, China Wushu is different from western boxing and other countries' fighting techniques.

The process of learning Wushu, like learning calligraphy and music, is a gradual process. Learning calligraphy must start with a horizontal stroke and a vertical stroke; Learning music should also start with one note and one syllable, which requires hard work, constant understanding and correction, and unremitting struggle to refine and surpass yourself.

The ancients created boxing from actual combat and developed their own personality on the basis of inheriting the skills of their predecessors. Combining rigidity with softness, combining rigidity with softness is determined by the quality and objective conditions of boxing creators. Today, if we want to inherit traditional martial arts, we should also follow this rule, so as to achieve selective inheritance and acceptance. As for whether traditional Wushu has the function of fighting and attacking, and whether it can be practiced in actual combat, history has already got the answer, so I don't need to say more here.

Wushu is an inseparable part of China Wushu, and of course it is also an extremely important part. However, we should learn Wushu on a certain moral and cultural level. The ancients used the words "stop" and "go" to form "Wu", and its far-reaching significance can be seen.

To stop fighting means to stop fighting, and the real realization of "stop fighting" must be backed by strong strength, which is strong physique, good skills, fearless spirit and excellent quality. The four are indispensable, so is the country and so should the people.

Today, I discussed with Mr. Han Qi how to inherit the traditional martial arts with a positive attitude and critically inherit the traditional martial arts in China. It is correct to find out the shortcomings and deficiencies of traditional Wushu in the process of inheritance and dissemination, and to improve and make up for them. However, we can't unilaterally deny the rationality of China Wushu based on our own opinions, which is neither scientific nor objective. China Wushu is not only entrusted with national feelings, but also a precious spiritual and cultural heritage of the Chinese nation.
