What does business mean?

Commerce is an organized behavior to provide goods and services that customers need. Most commercial activities make profits by selling goods or services at a price higher than the cost. For example, Microsoft, Sony, IBM, Lenovo and General Motors are typical representatives of profit-making commercial organizations.

However, some commercial activities are just to provide the basic funds needed for commercial operation, which are generally called non-profit, such as various foundations and the Red Cross. It is generally believed that commerce originated from barter in primitive society, and its essence is exchange, which is based on people's understanding of value.

The rise of commerce originated from the Shang state in the pre-Shang period, and it was a social activity in the form of barter in the primary stage. Later, it developed into an economic activity in which money was used as a medium to exchange and realize the circulation of goods. Modern commerce is divided into offline and online, which greatly improves the efficiency of trade.

Extended data:

The ancient commerce in China originated in the pre-Shang period, initially developed in the Qin and Han Dynasties, and further developed in the Sui and Tang Dynasties.

The origin of business:

After Zhou Wuwang's commerce was destroyed, some Shang Dynasty adherents who lost their land ran around doing business in order to make a living. After a long time, they formed permanent occupations. Zhou called them "businessmen" and called their profession "business".

This semester has continued to this day. The nobles of the Zhou dynasty would not do business. At that time, ordinary people could not do farming business, and the business of buying and selling goods was needed by society. Over time, the business of buying and selling commodities has become the main industry of Shang Dynasty adherents.

With the national integration and the development of commodity economy, a few aristocrats in the Zhou Dynasty began to do business, which gradually made businessmen lose the derogatory meaning of "stubborn people" and become professional names engaged in commodity trading.
