Guangzhou is the capital and sub-provincial city of Guangdong Province in the south of People's Republic of China (PRC). The city also has an older English name, Canton. It is a port of the Pearl River, navigable to the South China Sea and located about120km northwest of Hong Kong. As of the census in 2000, the population of this city is 6 million, and the metropolitan population is12.6 million, which makes it the most populous city in this province and the third most populous metropolis in China.
With the opening of Guangzhou Metro 1999, Guangzhou has become the fourth city in China to build an underground railway system. At present, there are four lines in operation and ambitious expansion plans, three lines are under construction and four lines are under planning.
The main airport in Guangzhou is the new Baiyun International Airport in Huadu District, which was opened on August 5, 2004, replacing the old Baiyun International Airport near the city center.
